Chapter 11 - The First Spring

Two weeks later, the grounds of the estate underwent a dramatic transformation.

The heavy iron perimeter gates—once symbols of imprisonment and elite exclusion—were unbolted and permanently swung wide open. In their place, landscaping crews planted rows of blooming white hydrangeas and soft green hedges, welcoming the neighborhood into what would soon become the headquarters of the newly established Lily Foundation—a charitable organization dedicated to supporting displaced families and victims of corporate extortion.

Four-year-old Lily laughed brightly as she chased a soccer ball across the expansive, manicured lawn, her small ponytails bouncing with every step.

I stood on the front steps, holding a clipboard with the final architectural drafts for the community center, feeling the warm spring breeze brush against my face. My shoulder still ached faintly when the weather turned damp, but the pain no longer held any power over me.

Nathan walked out of the double oak doors, carrying two glasses of fresh lemonade. He handed one to me, stepping up beside me on the porch.

“The bank vault is officially cleared,” Nathan said, smiling softly as he watched Lily score an imaginary goal against an oak tree. “Marcus transferred the original trust deeds over to the new foundation this morning. We’re officially debt-free, corruption-free, and entirely independent.”

“It feels surreal,” I admitted, leaning against his shoulder. “Like waking up from a very long, very dark dream.”

“It’s real,” Nathan murmured, kissing the top of my head. “And we’re never going back into the dark.”
