Chapter 15 - The Echo in the Network

Nathan stared down at the photograph, his jaw tightening. “Julian Vance is locked away, and Gertrude’s syndicate was completely dismantled. Who else could possibly have access to this archive?”
“Someone who wasn't part of the local inner circle,” I said quietly, analyzing the film grain and the date stamp on the back of the photo. “My father’s network was global. Brandon and Gertrude were just the loud, aggressive predators at the top of the food chain. But deep in international corporate governance, there are systems that operate entirely outside public accountability.”
Marcus entered the study, having heard our voices, and took the index card from the desk. His expression turned grim as he inspected the handwriting.
“This isn't a threat, Abigail,” Marcus murmured, adjusting his glasses. “It’s a warning. Or perhaps... an invitation.”
“An invitation to what?” Nathan asked.

I looked from Marcus to Nathan. The courtroom battles were over, the criminals were behind bars, but the deeper architecture of power and wealth in the world was vast and perpetually shifting. We had secured our home, but the horizon remained wide, complex, and unwritten.
