Chapter 9 - The Empty Safe

That evening, the estate felt vast, quiet, and profoundly peaceful. The heavy tension that had choked the hallways for years was entirely gone.
Nathan and I sat together in his late father’s private study. The desk was clear of the old corporate ledgers and threatening legal notices. Instead, a warm cup of tea sat beside a small, intricately carved wooden box that Nathan had found tucked away in the back of the walk-in closet behind his father’s old bookshelf.
“My father left this locked inside the wall recess,” Nathan said, turning the wooden box over in his hands. There was no keyhole, only a sliding brass panel on the bottom.
“Is there a combination?” I asked, leaning closer.
“No,” Nathan murmured, running his thumb over the engraved initials on the lid—A.C. “He told me once that the most important secrets don’t require numbers to open. They require understanding.”

He pressed gently on the top right corner of the carved wood. With a faint, satisfying click, the side panel slid open, revealing a folded piece of heavy parchment and a small, vintage silver key.
Nathan pulled out the parchment and unfolded it under the warm glow of the desk lamp.
