Chapter 10 - THE UNLOCKED DOOR

By 1:00 PM, I arrived back at the house.

The scene outside was chaotic. Two police cruisers were parked in the driveway alongside Frank’s sedans. Two officers were escorting Margaret out the front door in handcuffs. She was screaming threats, her silk robe disheveled, her diamond necklace replaced by heavy steel wrist restraints.

She saw me step out of my truck.

"David! Tell them to stop!" she shrieked, struggling against the officer's grip. "I'm your mother! You can't do this to me! I gave you life!"

I stopped in front of her, looking down into her hysterical face.

"You gave me life, Mom," I said quietly. "And then you tried to destroy the life I built."

"You ungrateful monster!" she spat. "After everything I sacrificed for you?!"

"Take her away," Frank told the officers.

As the police cruiser pulled away with Margaret screaming in the backseat, the heavy silence finally returned to the street. The house sat open, its grand marble interior now empty of its captors.

I walked up the grand spiral staircase, past the modern art and expensive lighting, straight to the master bedroom door at the end of the hall.

Frank was standing behind me, holding a heavy iron crowbar. "Want me to pop the lock, David?"

"No," I said, taking a key from my pocket—a key I had taken from Margaret’s purse.

I inserted the key into the deadbolt. CLICK.

The heavy wooden door swung open.

Inside, the master bedroom was a disaster. Clothes were scattered everywhere, expensive furniture crammed into corners—not from renovation, but because Margaret had been using it as a storage vault for her stolen luxury goods.

I walked past the clutter to the small pantry door in the back.

I knocked gently three times.

"Gwen?" I called softly. "It's me. It's David."

The door unlocked from the inside, clicking open slowly.

Gwen stood in the doorway. She was still wearing her oversized sweatshirt, but she had taken off the thick knit beanie. In her right hand, she clutched the small blue ribbon I had given her four years ago.

She looked at me, then past my shoulder into the empty, quiet hallway.

"Is... is it over?" she whispered, her Voice trembling with cautious disbelief. "Are they gone?"

I stepped into the narrow doorway, taking her small, cold hands in mine. I looked into her eyes, seeing the fear finally begin to recede, replaced by the soft glow of safety she hadn't felt in four years.

"They're gone, Gwen," I said gently, pulling her out of the dark closet and into the bright sunlight streaming through the master bedroom windows. "It's just us now. And this time, nobody is ever going to hurt you again."

She rested her head against my chest, her tears finally falling freely—not from fear, but from the realization that her long nightmare was finally over.

I held her tight in the center of the room, looking out over the quiet neighborhood. The battlefield was clear. The truth was out. And the rebuilding was about to begin.

Here are Chapters 11 through 15, moving into the aftermath, the legal reckoning, Gwen’s emotional recovery, and the complete dismantling of Margaret and Paige’s network.
