Chapter 7 - THE CONFRONTATION AT THE BANK

Margaret’s face turned an ugly, mottled red. "Legal team?! Have you lost your mind, David?! I am your mother! I managed this household while you were off playing soldier!"

"You didn't manage it, Margaret," Frank Vance stepped forward, pulling a gold fountain pen from his pocket. "You committed wire fraud, identity theft, and grand larceny under Federal Statute 1343. I am Frank Vance, lead counsel for Vance & Partners. And right now, you have approximately thirty minutes to cooperate before I file an emergency freezing injunction on every account carrying your name."

"You can't do that!" Margaret shrieked, backing toward the kitchen counter. "Gwen signed the power of attorney! She gave me full control!"

"A power of attorney signed under duress and facilitated by an unlicensed, discredited physician is legally void," Sarah announced from the table, her fingers flying across her keyboard. "In fact, Mr. Vance... I just bypassed the local credit union's firewall using your military power of attorney override. The paper trail is astonishingly sloppy."

I walked over to the laptop screen.

"Explain it to me, Sarah," I said flatly.

"Over forty-eight months, you transferred ninety-six thousand dollars into the joint account," Sarah read off the screen. "Within forty-eight hours of each transfer, eighty percent of the funds were moved into an offshore shell account registered under Paige Vance LLC. The rest was spent directly on luxury retail, home additions, and lease payments for a '25 GMC Sierra Denali."

"My truck," I whispered, the realization hitting me. The luxury vehicle parked in the driveway wasn't bought by a wealthy businessman—it was bought with the blood I spilled overseas.

"David, listen to me!" Margaret pleaded, her voice turning frantic as she realized the net was closing. "Paige needed that money! She was starting a business! We did it for the family!"

"Where is Paige right now, Mom?" I asked, my voice terrifyingly calm.

Margaret swallowed hard. "She's... she's at her apartment downtown."

I turned to Frank. "Hold the house. Don't let her leave or touch a phone. I'm going to pay my sister a visit."
