Chapter 13 - THE FALL OF DR. HARRISON

While the legal trap snapped shut around Margaret and Paige, there was still one loose end that needed to be severed.

At 2:00 PM the following afternoon, I stood outside the sleek brick medical building of Harrison Family Practice in the suburbs of Northbrook.

I didn't go alone. Beside me walked Agent Raymond Miller from the State Medical Licensing Board, along with two plainclothes officers from the state financial crimes division.

We walked into the quiet, upscale lobby. The air smelled of expensive eucalyptus oil and fake professionalism.

The receptionist looked up, smiling politely. "Can I help you?"

"Dr. Harrison is expecting us," I said flatly, walking past her desk before she could press an intercom button.

I pushed open the door to Harrison’s private office.

The doctor was sitting behind a large mahogany desk, scrolling through his computer screen. He looked up, his face instantly draining of all color when his eyes landed on me.

"You..." Harrison gasped, pushing his chair back so fast it hit the wall behind him. "I... I told you everything! I cooperated with your lawyer!"

"You gave a statement, Doctor," Agent Miller stepped forward, pulling a gold badge from his jacket along with a formal search warrant. "Which prompted a full audit of your prescription logs, disability certifications, and medical exemption filings over the last six years."

Harrison’s lips trembled. "What are you talking about? My records are completely clean!"

"They were clean until we cross-referenced your bank deposits," Miller said, pulling out a set of steel handcuffs. "We found over forty fraudulent conservatorship filings where you received kickbacks from family members trying to seize assets from elderly or vulnerable patients. Gwen Vance was just your latest payday."

"No... wait!" Harrison panicked, looking at me with wide, pleading eyes. "David, please! I was dragged into this by your mother! She told me Gwen was unhinged! I was just trying to help—"

"You signed a paper that let them lock my wife in a closet for four years, Harrison," I said, stepping closer to his desk, my voice dropping into a razor-thin whisper. "You stripped her of her freedom for five hundred dollars a month."

Harrison swallowed hard, unable to meet my gaze.

"You're done practicing medicine," Miller said, snapping the cuffs around Harrison’s wrists. "And by tonight, your license will be permanently revoked by the state board."

As the officers led Harrison out through his own waiting room in full view of his patients, I stood in his office, watching the framed diplomas on his wall get taken down by evidence technicians.

The network that had trapped Gwen was finally crumbling, piece by piece, stone by stone.
