Chapter 5 - THE BATTLEFIELD IS SET

The world stopped turning.
The blood in my veins felt like liquid nitrogen. I stared at the raw cuts on my wife's scalp, at the fading purple bruises around her temples where someone's heavy hands had pinned her to the floorboards.
She held me down on the kitchen floor.
The memory of Paige throwing the rolled-up magazine at Gwen’s shoulder earlier today flashed in my mind. The memory of my mother sitting in a silk robe with a diamond necklace around her neck while Gwen scrubbed her cast-iron pan.
They hadn't just stolen my money.
They had tortured my wife. They had broken her spirit, locked her in a closet, and stripped her of her human dignity, turning her into a battered servant in her own home.
"David?" Gwen whispered, terrified by the deadly, expressionless silence that had fallen over me. "David, please say something... you're scaring me."
I slowly brought my hands up, gently taking her face in my palms. I kissed her forehead, right above one of the faint red scars, holding her close against my chest.
"I'm not angry at you, Gwen," I said, my voice dropping into a tone so cold and quiet it sounded like steel sliding out of a scabbard. "I am never going to be angry at you."
"What... what are we going to do?" she sobbed softly. "We can't fight them. Margaret has all the legal papers. She controls the bank accounts. She told the neighbors I'm mentally unstable..."
"Listen to me very carefully, Gwen," I said, looking directly into her eyes. "Margaret thinks she controls this house. She thinks she owns the money. She thinks I am still the naive boy who left four years ago to play soldier."
I reached into my pocket and pulled out a small, heavy silver USB drive I had brought back from my unit's communications officer.
"They built a kingdom out of my sacrifice," I whispered, a dark, lethal smile touching the corners of my lips. "And I am going to burn it to the ground."
"David..."
"Tomorrow morning, I am going to the bank," I told her. "I am going to meet Dr. Harrison. And then I am going to pay a visit to Paige’s apartment."
I pulled the beanie back up and gently placed it over her head, tucking a stray piece of stubble beneath the wool.
"You stay in this room tonight," I instructed her softly. "Keep the door locked from the inside. No matter what you hear tomorrow, no matter how loudly they scream... do not come out until I open the door for you. Do you understand?"
Gwen looked at the silver USB drive in my hand, then up at my eyes. For the first time in four years, the terror in her face began to melt away, replaced by a tiny, flickering spark of hope.
"I understand," she whispered.
I kissed her lips gently, feeling her warm breath against my skin.
"The deployment is over, Gwen," I whispered against her cheek. "Now, the war begins."
I slipped out of the closet, closing the door softly behind me. Standing in the dark, silent hallway of my home, I pulled my phone from my pocket and dialed a number I hadn't called in four years.
The line rang twice before a sharp, familiar voice answered.
"Vance," the voice said. "I thought you were dead."
"I'm alive, Frank," I said coldly. "I need your legal team, your forensic auditors, and a tactical detail at my address by eight o'clock tomorrow morning."
On the other end of the line, Frank Vance—my former commander and now one of the most powerful corporate litigation attorneys in the state—paused.
"Who's the target, David?" Frank asked softly.
I looked down the dark hallway toward my mother's bedroom door.

"My family," I said.
