Chapter 9 - THE DOCTOR'S CONFESSION

Harrison’s eyes went wide with sheer terror. "W-wait..." he choked out, his hands clawing uselessly at my wrist. "Don't... don't involve the Feds... please..."
I released his throat, letting him slump down onto the hardwood floor, coughing hysterically. I opened the leather folder in my hand and tossed a stack of bank statements and medical affidavits onto the glass coffee table.
"You signed false medical reports claiming Gwen was suffering from severe early-onset dementia," I said, leaning over Harrison. "You gave Margaret the legal justification to act as her conservator. How much did Paige pay you per signature?"
"It... it was five hundred dollars a month!" Harrison blurted out, pale and gasping for air. "It was Margaret's idea! She said Gwen was going to leave with your money and leave them broke! She said she was protecting you!"
"You bastard!" Paige screamed, throwing a throw pillow at Harrison. "Shut up!"
I turned slowly to face my sister.
She backed away until her knees hit the edge of her luxury leather couch. She looked at me, no longer the arrogant girl drinking champagne in my kitchen, but a terrified thief caught red-handed.
"Three weeks ago," I said, my voice dropping into a register that made her shiver. "You held my wife down on the kitchen floor and shaved her head."
Paige swallowed hard, tears finally leaking down her cheeks. "She... she was going to ruin everything, David! She tried to run out into the street! If the neighbors saw her like that, they would have asked questions! I was just trying to keep her inside until we could figure things out!"
"You humiliated her," I said, stepping closer. "You robbed her of her dignity so she would be too ashamed to look in a mirror, let alone ask for help."
"David, please... I'm your sister!" Paige sobbed, dropping to her knees. "We grew up together! Mom told me it was okay! She said the money was family money!"
"You're not my sister," I said coldly. "You're a predator who fed on my wife while I was fighting overseas."
I pulled out my phone and pressed speakerphone. Frank Vance's voice echoed through the apartment.
"David? We have the emergency court order," Frank said. "The state prosecutor just signed the warrants. We're seizing Paige's accounts, her apartment lease, and the vehicle. Police units are en route to your location right now."

I looked down at Paige, who buried her face in her hands, wailing hysterically on the floor.
"Enjoy the apartment while you can, Paige," I said. "You have about five minutes before the sheriffs arrive."
