Chapter 13 - THE ARCHIVIST'S DOSSIER

Ten minutes later, a silver panel van glided silently into the barn's waterlogged driveway, its running lights off.
Nora—a sharp-eyed woman in her late thirties with cut-short dark hair and a grease-stained raincoat—stepped out, ushering Elowen and baby Leo inside the van's reinforced rear cabin.
Inside, screens glowed with land-registry maps, court filings, and financial flowcharts tracing international wire transfers.
Nora spread the Zurich documents across a illuminated drafting table, her eyes scanning the clinical logs with practiced, lethal speed.
"It’s worse than you thought, Elowen," Nora said, pointing a pen at a section of the Swedish banking codes stamped on the second page. "This isn't just about passing Iris's genetics down to claim the Vance family trust. Look at the trustees listed on page four."
Elowen leaned over the table, holding Leo close as her eyes followed Nora's finger.

Listed beneath Mara Vance’s name as secondary trust beneficiaries were three high-ranking officials: a regional family court judge, the deputy director of the state child protective agency, and the lead medical examiner who had signed off on Elowen's specialized IVF clinic paperwork.
"They built a self-contained legal machine," Nora explained, her face grim. "The moment you gave birth, the system was programmed to trigger an emergency custody revocation based on falsified postpartum psychiatric reports. You weren't just meant to lose Leo—you were meant to be placed under a court-ordered conservatorship where you couldn't speak to the press or hire an independent lawyer."
