Chapter 20 - THE UNLOCKED DOOR
Four months later.
The morning sun washed warmly over the peaceful garden terrace of a modest, light-filled cottage situated in a quiet coastal town fifty miles from Oakridge Lane.
The Vance family trust had been permanently dismantled by federal court decree. The illegal surrogacy network was exposed worldwide, leading to dozens of indictments across three countries. Kael and Mara were both serving lengthy federal prison sentences for false imprisonment, conspiracy, and wire fraud.
On the wooden deck, baby Leo—now five months old, chubby, healthy, and laughing—sat on a soft quilted blanket, kicking his tiny feet as he reached for a colorful wooden rattle.
Elowen sat beside him in a rocking chair, sipping hot tea while reading through a final legal decree sent by her attorney.

Nora walked out onto the porch through the wide French doors, holding a tray of freshly baked muffins.
"Package came in the morning mail for you," Nora said with a bright smile, setting a small cardboard box on the porch table.
Elowen opened the box. Inside was a brand-new smartphone sent by her legal team, along with a small plastic card containing a newly activated SIM card.
Elowen looked down at the tiny piece of plastic in her palm, a soft, peaceful smile breaking across her face.
She inserted the SIM card into the tray, slid it into the phone until it clicked smoothly into place, and powered the device on.
Within seconds, the screen illuminated bright and clear:
FULL SERVICE.
Elowen set the phone down on the table, picked up baby Leo into her arms, and held him close against her heart, listening to the peaceful sound of the ocean waves crashing gently against the shore below.
