Chapter 15 - THE AUDIT

Mara’s icy composure cracked. She half-stood from her bench seat, her knuckles turning white around her purse strap.

"Your Honor," the federal prosecutor announced, stepping up to the bar before the judge. "The Department of Justice is intervening in these proceedings under the Federal Wire Fraud and Human Trafficking Enforcement Act."

The judge stared in astonishment. "Prosecutor, on what grounds?"

"Ten minutes ago," the prosecutor declared, unsealing a red-stamped federal folder, "an emergency audit was executed on the offshore accounts associated with the Vance Family Trust. We have recovered full clinical records from Zurich, along with recorded 911 dispatch audio and encrypted communications detailing a conspiracy to commit parental abduction, medical forgery, and obstruction of justice."

The prosecutor turned slightly, looking directly at Kael and Mara.

"Furthermore, forensic analysis of the emergency line call confirmed that Mr. Kael Vance deliberately removed the victim's SIM card to prevent crime reporting—an act fully documented as part of an ongoing pattern of false imprisonment."

Kael’s face drained of every drop of color. He spun toward his mother, his voice cracking into a panicked whisper: "Mara... you said the judge was covered!"

"Silence!" her attorney hissed, grabbing Kael’s arm, but the slip was caught on every court microphone in the room.

The judge’s face hardened into stone. He slammed his gavel down onto the oak block with a crack that echoed through the high-ceilinged room.

"Bail for Kael Vance is revoked," the judge ordered coldly. "Officers, remand the defendant into federal custody immediately. And place a hold on all assets belonging to Mara Vance pending grand jury indictment."

As federal agents stepped forward to handcuff Kael once more, Mara stood frozen, her eyes locking onto Elowen.

Elowen didn't flinch. She took a step closer to the bar, looking her mother-in-law straight in the eye with calm, unyielding strength.

"You took my SIM card, Mara," Elowen said softly, her voice echoing clearly across the quiet courtroom. "But everyone is listening now."
