Chapter 8 - THE NURSERY’S SECRET

As the police led a silent, glowering Kael out the front door in handcuffs, Mara remained standing in the foyer, her eyes cold as ice as she watched her son being loaded into the back of a patrol car.
"This isn't over, Elowen," Mara whispered, stepping closer to Elowen, who was sitting on the sofa holding Leo. "You have no idea what you've just done to this family."
"Get out of my house, Mara," Elowen said, her voice shaking but firm.
"This house belongs to my family's trust," Mara replied, a bitter, triumphant sneer touching her red lips. "And as long as that child carries the Vance name, you are nothing more than a temporary caretaker."
Officer Ramirez escorted a reluctant Mara out to her sedan, warning her not to return to the property without a police escort.
Once the house fell silent, the front door locked from the inside by the remaining deputy posted outside on the porch, Elowen finally let out a long, shuddering breath. She walked up the stairs toward the nursery, her mind reeling from the traumatic night.
She laid baby Leo in his crib, watching his tiny chest rise and fall peacefully.

Then, her eyes drifted to the corner of the room.
The small built-in closet where Mara had spent hours 'organizing' Leo's baby clothes sat slightly ajar. Remembering the leather envelope Mara had tried to retrieve during the police breach, Elowen walked over and pulled the closet door fully open.
