Chapter 7 - THE INCIDENT REPORT

Ten minutes later, the house was illuminated by the flashing red and blue strobes of three police cruisers parked along the curb.

An emergency medical technician sat beside Elowen in the kitchen, gently pressing an ice pack to her bruised nose while checking newborn Leo's vitals. Across the marble island stood Officer Ramirez, a stern, experienced cop whose notebook was open as he reviewed the 911 audio log sent directly to his patrol cruiser's dashboard terminal.

Kael and Mara sat at the dining room table under the supervision of a second officer. Kael’s face was pale, his jaw set tightly, while Mara spoke smoothly to the deputy, her voice dripping with practiced elegance.

"Officer, it was a terrible misunderstanding," Mara insisted, dabbing at her dry eyes with a silk tissue. "Elowen has been struggling with severe postpartum psychosis since the birth. She hallucinated an argument, locked herself in the bathroom, and slipped near the vanity. My son was simply trying to rescue his child from an unstable mother."

Officer Ramirez walked over to the dining table, tapping his pen against his notebook. His face was unreadable.

"That's a very convincing story, Mrs. Vance," Ramirez said flatly. "Except your son admitted on a recorded 911 call that he removed her SIM card to stop her from calling for help. And my officers found the SIM tray tool sitting on your kitchen counter."

Kael swallowed hard, looking over at his mother for a lifeline.

"I am placing you under arrest for domestic assault, false imprisonment, and tampering with emergency communications, Mr. Vance," Ramirez declared, stepping forward with handcuffs drawn.
