Chapter 13 - The Mountain Safehouse
By 3:00 a.m., we reached our destination: an abandoned military observation post nestled deep within a steep, wind-scoured canyon gorge, built during the height of the Cold War. It was completely hidden from aerial view, reinforced with three-foot-thick concrete walls, an independent diesel generator, and a heavy steel blast door that could withstand a direct mortar strike.
I carefully carried Irene inside, settling her gently onto a secure camp cot while Vance immediately set to work securing the perimeter, stringing up tripwires, claymore proximity sensors, and thermal motion detectors along the rocky approaches.
“This place is an absolute fortress,” Irene whispered, looking around the Spartan, concrete-walled room lit only by a single battery-powered tactical lantern. Her hand reached out, grabbing my wrist. “Austin… do you really think they can find us out here? The Meridian Group has eyes everywhere.”

“If they rely on commercial satellite tracking or cell tower triangulation, no,” I said, walking over to a tactical laptop and connecting it directly to a hardened, closed-circuit satellite dish bolted to the rocky exterior roof. “But they aren't ordinary corporate executives. They have black-ops reconnaissance assets. We have less than twelve hours before they sweep this entire mountain range using thermal-imaging drones.”
“Then we don't wait for them to corner us,” Irene said, her voice carrying a sudden, fierce resolve that caught me completely off guard. She sat up, her dark eyes flashing with determination. “Austin, look at the internal directory of the titanium chip. My father didn't just hide financial ledgers and personal journals there. He left the master cryptographic keys to their primary offshore clearinghouse accounts in the Cayman Islands—the very accounts holding the slush funds for every corrupt politician and judge in the Southwest. If we broadcast this data globally to every major international news network and the Department of Justice watchdog simultaneously, their entire financial empire implodes before they can even reach our coordinates.”
