Chapter 16 - The Final Confrontation

Before I could fire another suppressing round toward the ridge, a heavy explosive charge detonated against the cabin’s steel ventilation shaft on the southern wall. The blast blew the inner metal grate violently inward, filling the cramped concrete room with a thick, choking cloud of acrid white smoke and sulfur.

Through the swirling dense haze, a tall, imposing figure stepped smoothly across the threshold, flanked by two heavily armed mercenaries. It was the scarred man from the hospital—his face still bruised and swollen from our previous encounter—holding an assault rifle aimed squarely at my chest with a cold, dead look in his eyes.

“Game over, Colonel,” the man sneered, his voice dripping with sadistic satisfaction as he advanced into the room. “You played a magnificent, stubborn hand, but the house always wins in the end.”

Before he could pull the trigger, the heavy metal door behind him swung open with a violent, shattering crash that echoed like thunder.

My mother, Margaret, rushed stumbling into the room, followed closely by my sister Carla. Their designer clothes were torn and filthy, their hair wild and disheveled, their faces twisted with absolute, raving panic. They looked completely unhinged—abandoned by the very monsters they had trusted.

“Don’t shoot!” Margaret shrieked at the top of her lungs, throwing her hands wildly up into the air between the mercenary and us. “You promised us full immunity! You swore that if we led your strike team to this cabin, our debts would be wiped clean and our freedom restored!”

The scarred mercenary glanced down at Margaret with a look of utter, chilling disgust. “You served your temporary purpose, Mrs. Wentworth. You were never partners. You were always just loose ends.”

He shifted his rifle barrel slightly to shoot straight past her.

That split second of hesitation—that tiny fraction of human arrogance—was all Vance and I needed. Vance dropped silently from the overhead storage loft, driving his combat knife deep into the shoulder of the nearest mercenary, while I lunged forward with explosive fury, tackling the scarred operative hard to the concrete floor, wresting the rifle from his grip and slamming the heavy steel buttstock into his skull until his eyes rolled back and he went completely limp.
