Chapter 5 - The Confrontation in Room 412

When I pushed open the door to hospital room 412, the afternoon sun was streaming brightly through the blinds, casting warm bars of gold across the white sheets.
Irene was awake. She sat propped up against the pillows, her swollen face looking heartbreakingly fragile against the stark hospital gown. A cup of ice water sat untouched on the tray beside her.
When she saw me enter, her hands began to tremble. She pulled the blanket up defensively around her chin, tears welling instantly in her dark eyes.
“Austin… please,” she whispered, her voice cracking. “I can explain everything. I swear to you, I didn’t mean to lie—”
I didn't rush across the room to comfort her, nor did I raise my voice. I walked slowly to the foot of her bed, placed the manila folder down on the rolling tray, and slid it toward her.
“Start talking, Irene,” I said quietly, the weight of a colonel commanding a battlefield heavy in every syllable. “Tell me who Chloe DuPont is. And tell me why my mother and sister were trying to tear apart my safe to find papers bearing her name.”
Irene stared at the folder, the blood draining completely from her cheeks until she looked as white as the hospital linen. For a long moment, the only sound in the room was the rhythmic clicking of the heart monitor.

Then, a single tear slipped down her bruised cheek, and she whispered the words that would change our lives forever:
“They didn’t die in that fire, Austin. My parents were murdered by the men your family has been doing business with for a decade. And tonight… those same men know I have the proof.”
