Chapter 13 - Blood on the Floorboards

A flashbang detonated in the foyer, filling the lower floor with a blinding flash and a concussive shockwave. But I was already in position on the upper catwalk, using the layout of my home to my absolute advantage.
"Target confirmed upstairs! Move in pairs!" a voice barked down below.
I dropped quietly from the attic hatch behind the trailing mercenary, driving my combat blade directly into his neck before he could squeeze his trigger. I caught his falling rifle, stripped his extra magazines, and vanished into the guest room shadows.
"Team leader, Unit 2 is down!" a frantic radio call echoed through the hallway.
I pulled the pin on a flash grenade and rolled it down the hardwood stairs. The burst disoriented the second man long enough for me to clear the doorway and double-tap him through the banister.

Suppressed automatic fire instantly ripped through the walls around me, spraying drywall, glass, and wood splinters into the air.
I leaned out to return fire, dropping the third mercenary, but a heavy round slammed into my left shoulder plate, tearing through the kevlar and throwing me violently against the floorboards.
