Chapter 3 - The Blanket Raised

Desperate for the final piece of the truth, I marched back to our dark bedroom. Part of me was still consumed by a bitter, poisonous rage, expecting to confront a wife who had conspired with my corrupt family to ruin me.
I stood beside the bed, looking down at Elena’s frail form under the heavy blanket.
"Elena, wake up," I said softly.
She didn't move.
I reached down and slowly, carefully pulled the blanket back from her body.
The breath was violently sucked from my lungs.
Her oversized sweater had ridden up around her waist. Across her ribs were deep, sickening patches of dark purple and yellow bruising. As I pulled the fabric higher, my heart shattered into a thousand pieces.
Finger-shaped strangle marks wrapped around both of her delicate wrists. Faded red welts from a belt or a cable stretched across her back. Her ribs were swollen, clearly fractured and left to heal without a doctor's care.
There was no lover. There was no betrayal.
There was only pure, unadulterated torture.
"Dear God..." I whispered, dropping to my knees beside the mattress.
"Who did this to you?"
Elena slowly opened her eyes. Seeing the horror and tears on my face, the wall of fear she had built around herself finally crumbled. She reached out with trembling, bruised fingers and touched my cheek.
"Your mother and Ricardo..." she sobbed, her voice breaking into agonizing gasps.
"They told me you were dead... they said if I didn't sign the papers, they would kill my little sister... Ricardo beat me whenever I refused... your mother watched him do it, Lucas... they locked me in the basement for weeks..."
From down the hallway, through the open patio doors, the sound of clinking glass floated into the bedroom.
My mother’s high-pitched laugh echoed through the night air, followed by Ricardo’s deep chuckle as they toasted each other with expensive champagne, celebrating the multi-million-dollar fortune they thought they had successfully stolen.
I gently pulled the blanket back over my wife’s broken body, leaned down, and kissed her tear-stained forehead.

"Rest now, Elena," I whispered, my voice flat, calm, and utterly devoid of mercy.
"I'm home."
