Chapter 2 - Shadows in the Sheets

That night, the house felt heavy with unspoken horrors. Elena lay on the far edge of our king-sized bed, curled into a tight, defensive ball beneath the heavy duvet. The mattress vibrated with the subtle, violent tremors of her body.

When I sat on the edge of the bed and gently reached out to touch her shoulder, she gasped and recoiled as if she had been burned by hot iron.

My chest tightened in agony. My mother’s whispered warnings from earlier in the evening echoed in my mind: She’s been seeing someone else, Lucas. She’s just waiting for the right moment to leave you.

"Elena..." I choked out into the darkness, hating the words before they even left my throat.

"Is there someone else?"

She closed her eyes tightly, tears spilling over her pale cheeks, but her lips remained sealed. She buried her face into the pillow and wept in absolute, suffocating silence.

I couldn't sleep. At three in the morning, I slipped out of bed and began searching the house like a military investigator clearing a compound.

In the bottom drawer of the desk in my study, I found an old burner phone. Stashed beneath it was a thick accordion folder stuffed with scanned legal documents, corporate filings, property deeds, and bank statements.

I flipped through the pages under the dim desk lamp, my blood running colder with every second.

Our marital home had been signed over to a private holding company. The small logistics business Elena and I had spent five years building had been liquidated and transferred. My personal investment accounts were completely wiped out.

Every single asset now belonged to a newly formed LLC registered under one name: Ricardo Miller.

At the bottom of the property transfer deed were two signatures. One was Elena’s trembling script. The other was my own name—signed in bold, dark ink on a date when I was actively taking mortar fire in the Middle East.

My brother and mother hadn't just taken my money. They had forged my signature to rob me blind while I was fighting for my country.
