Chapter 16 - The Unbroken Horizon

Three months later, the morning sun broke over the Maine coastline, painting the ocean in shades of deep gold and vibrant blue.

Our house had been completely restored—not as a fortress, but as a home. The mercenaries were dead, Ricardo’s dark-web accounts had been seized and emptied by federal authorities, and my mother’s legal appeals had officially reached a permanent dead end. The shadows had finally run out of places to hide.

I walked out onto the sunlit back deck, holding two warm mugs of coffee. My left arm was still in a light brace, but the pain was gone, replaced by a quiet, steady strength.

Elena was standing near the edge of the deck, looking out at the endless water. She wore a bright white dress, her hair catching the coastal breeze, her face radiant with health and undisturbed peace.

I slid my good arm around her waist, pulling her back against my chest.

"What are you thinking about, sweetheart?" I asked softly, kissing the side of her neck.

"I was thinking about the foundation," she smiled, resting her hands over mine.

"We just finalized the purchase of twenty acres in Texas. We're building a permanent shelter right where your family's old ranch used to be."

I looked out at the ocean, feeling the heavy weight of the past ten years finally evaporate into the morning air.

"They tried to break you, Elena," I whispered into the wind.

Elena turned in my arms, looking up into my eyes with a smile that could light up the darkest night.

"They tried, Lucas," she said softly, holding my face in her hands.

"But they forgot that you were coming home to help me fight back."
