Chapter 5 - The Reckoning

At 1:55 PM, Ricardo and my mother strolled into the high-rise conference room in downtown Austin, looking like royalty. Ricardo was still wearing my leather jacket, and my mother was draped in a brand-new mink coat purchased with my stolen funds.
"Where are the papers, Lucas?" Ricardo asked, sliding into a leather chair at the end of the mahogany table.
"Let's get this money moved."
I stood by the floor-to-ceiling window, looking out over the city skyline.
"There are no pension papers, Ricardo."
My mother frowned.
"Lucas, what kind of joke is this?"
I turned around and pressed a button on the conference room phone.
The double doors of the boardroom flew open. Four armed Military Police officers and two State Troopers flooded into the room, their weapons drawn and leveled directly at my family. Behind them stepped a forensic medical team pushing a wheelchair.
Sitting in the wheelchair was Elena, wrapped in a clean coat, flanked by a state prosecutor and a trauma physician.
"Ricardo Miller and Eleanor Miller," the lead prosecutor announced calmly.
"You are under arrest for grand larceny, corporate fraud, felony forgery, aggravated assault, and first-degree human trafficking."
My mother let out a piering shriek, backing away into the corner.
"Lucas! Tell them to stop! We are your family! That crazy girl is lying to you!"
"She didn't have to say a word, Mom," I said, my voice cutting through her screams like a blade.
"The forensic team took high-resolution scans of her bruises four hours ago. The fingerprints on her arms match Ricardo's. The handwriting experts have already confirmed the signatures on my property deeds were forged. And the hidden cameras I installed in the house last night caught you two discussing how you starved her."
Ricardo panicked. He lunged toward the side exit, but two federal agents slammed him face-first onto the glass conference table, forcing his arms behind his back and snapping heavy steel handcuffs over his wrists. My favorite Swiss watch shattered against the glass top.
"Get your hands off me!" Ricardo screamed, his face bright red as he struggled against the steel grip.
"Lucas! You can't do this to your own brother!"
I walked over to him, pulled my leather jacket off his shoulders, and leaned down until my lips were inches from his ear.
"You took my life, you tortured my wife, and you wore my clothes," I whispered coldly.
"You're going to spend the next twenty years in a federal penitentiary wearing a bright orange jumpsuit."
My mother was dragged out of the room sobbing hysterically, while Ricardo was hauled away in chains.
I walked over to Elena, knelt beside her wheelchair, and took her trembling, bruised hands into mine. For the first time in six terrifying months, a small, genuine smile touched her lips, and tears of true relief spilled down her cheeks.
I pulled her gently into my arms, holding her close against my chest.

"It's over, Elena," I whispered into her hair.
"They will never touch you again."
