Two years after that fateful morning in the kitchen, the sun felt warmer, casting a brilliant golden hue across the freshly polished stone of the estate’s front courtyard.
The burn on my cheek had long since faded into a faint, silvery line—a quiet, graceful badge of survival rather than a mark of pain.
I stood on the expansive back terrace, watching the morning mist rise gently off the private lake that bordered the northern edge of the property.
My phone buzzed softly on the wrought-iron table beside my teacup.
It was an update from the newly opened advocacy center, reporting that their first cohort of graduates had successfully secured independent housing and employment.
I smiled, an unburdened, radiant smile that reached all the way to my eyes.
The iron gates at the end of the long driveway remained open during the day, but no uninvited ghosts or parasites would ever walk them again.
