Chapter 4 - The Tables Turn

Julian stammered incoherently, taking a panicked, stumbling step backward onto the welcome mat as if trying to flee.
“This... this has to be some kind of administrative mistake. We live here. This is our home, our life.”
“This is my home, Julian,” I said, my voice cutting through the foyer like shards of broken glass. “Purchased by my family, protected by my irrevocable trust, and maintained entirely without your input, your money, or your permission.”
The detective stepped forward smoothly, unzipping a leather folio and pulling out a formal, stamped official report.
“Mr. Julian Vance, you are named in a sworn criminal affidavit filed this morning for aggravated assault, domestic battery, and destruction of personal property, supported by photographic evidence of physical injury and hospital intake logs.”
Eleanor shrieked like a banshee, lunging forward with her manicured hands clawing frantically at the air.
“You can’t do this to him! He is your husband! You belong to him, and this house belongs to our family!”
Darcy adjusted her glasses calmly, stepping smoothly between Eleanor and me to block her path.
“Ma'am, interfering with an active police investigation and trespassing on private property owned exclusively by Ms. Vance is a very swift path to joining your son in the back of a squad car.”
Julian’s arrogant bravado completely evaporated, leaving behind a pathetic, shaking man staring desperately and tearfully at my face.
“Sloan, please, listen to me,” he choked out, his voice cracking into a desperate whimper. “We can talk about this like adults. Don’t ruin our lives over a temper mistake. Let’s drop the charges, please.”

I raised my chin, looking at the angry, fading scar still fresh on my neck, remembering how easily he had discarded my safety and humanity for a European holiday.
“You told me to get out of your house, Julian,” I replied coldly, the finality in my tone absolute. “Now, experience what it truly feels like to have nowhere left to run.”
