Chapter 3 - The Confrontation

The morning sun cast a sharp, cold light across the gravel driveway as I stood inside the soaring foyer beside Darcy, waiting for the inevitable confrontation they had so eagerly orchestrated.

At exactly 9:17 AM, Julian’s luxury SUV crunched aggressively up the driveway, parking haphazardly near the front steps.

Eleanor climbed out of the passenger side first, smoothing down her designer coat with a victorious, self-satisfied smirk plastered across her face.

Julian strode confidently behind her, hands in his pockets, looking ready to deliver the final blow of our supposed domestic hierarchy.

Then Julian reached the front porch, stepped across the stone threshold, and froze dead in his tracks.

I stood right inside the entryway, holding the open navy folder in my hands as if welcoming them to a trap.

Darcy stood like a statue directly to my right, holding a thick stack of official affidavits.

And standing right behind us in the shadows were two unexpected figures: our local precinct’s chief detective and a senior forensic investigator from the county medical examiner's office.

Julian’s face drained of all color in an instant, turning a pasty, sickly white as reality crashed down on him.

Eleanor staggered backward off the mat, her voice trembling in sudden, unadulterated panic as she whispered, “What on earth have you done?”

I looked straight past her, locking my eyes with my terrified, cornered husband.

“No, Julian.”

I tilted the first document forward, letting the bold red notary seals catch his eye.

“The question is what you did.”
