Chapter 5 - A New Foundation

The heavy slam of the police cruiser doors echoed loudly across the manicured lawn as Julian was driven away in handcuffs, his mother screaming obscenities and crying hysterically from the sidewalk until an officer firmly escorted her off the property line.

Within an hour, a team of commercial locksmiths arrived to change every smart lock, deadbolt, and security code on the estate, erasing every digital and physical trace of Julian’s access to my life.

I walked slowly and deliberately through the grand living room, tracing my fingers along the mahogany mantelpiece while the morning sunlight poured through the towering windows.

The silence in the house was no longer heavy, oppressive, or walking on eggshells; it was clean, vast, and entirely mine.

The burn on my face would heal in a few weeks, leaving behind a faint physical reminder of a lesson dearly and painfully purchased.
