Chapter 2 - The Legal Reality

Two hours later, I sat across the polished mahogany desk from my attorney, Darcy Bennett, in her downtown corporate office.
Darcy gently examined the angry, blistering red burn spreading across my cheek before carefully unlacing the cotton string of the navy-blue folder.
Inside rested the original deed, the irrevocable family trust documents, and the unalterable property records for the multimillion-dollar estate Julian had just ordered me to abandon.
Darcy read through the primary pages twice, her sharp eyes narrowing with professional satisfaction as every clause aligned precisely.
Then a slow, predatory smile spread across her lips.
“He actually stood in the foyer and told you to get out of his house?”
“Word for word, without a shred of hesitation.”
Darcy closed the folder with a crisp, echoing snap that broke the quiet of the office.
“Oh, Sloan. Tomorrow morning is going to be exceptionally educational for him.”
Julian had conveniently forgotten the most crucial detail of our entire marriage, blinded by his mother's constant whispering and his own inflated ego.
The sprawling estate had been placed directly into my family trust years before I ever met him, protected stringently by my late father’s estate planners to safeguard generational assets.
His name had never touched the deed, not even as a secondary occupant.

Eleanor’s certainly never belonged anywhere near it, despite her years of treating the guest rooms like her personal royal quarters.
The legal bindings in front of Darcy stripped away every ounce of false authority they believed they possessed over me and my home.
