Chapter 1 - The Rehearsal Dinner Ultimatum

Twenty-four hours earlier, I was arranging white orchids for Ethan's rehearsal dinner inside my Manhattan penthouse. I'd bought the place cash after selling the cybersecurity company I'd built entirely from my kitchen table. My family knew I'd done well, but they had no idea just how deep my portfolio ran—or that the penthouse was merely a drop in the bucket of my actual net worth.

That afternoon, Ethan arrived alongside our parents and his snobbish fiancée, Chloe.

“We need to settle something,” Ethan announced, bypassing polite greetings entirely as he strode across my imported hardwood floors.

He dropped a thick, cream-colored manila folder onto my marble coffee table.

“Chloe and I are taking the penthouse after the wedding tomorrow. It's a much better setting for our future family.”

I stared at him, holding a stem of white orchids mid-air. “Taking?”

Mom sighed, shaking her head like I was being an unreasonable child. “Claire, you're single. You don't need four bedrooms and a private terrace.”

I looked down at my massive, eight-month pregnant belly, pressing a palm against my taut skin. “I'm having a baby. In less than a month.”

Dad shrugged indifferently, checking his Rolex. “You can rent a nice little place somewhere in Queens. It’s cheaper.”

I picked up the folder and flipped it open. Inside sat a complete deed-transfer form, legally binding and fully prepared.

“You actually expect me to sign away my home?”

Ethan smiled, entirely self-assured. “I already told Chloe this would be our home. Don't ruin my rehearsal weekend over a little real estate.”

I slid the papers back across the marble. “No.”

His smooth facade cracked instantly. “Don't do this to me. Not the day before my wedding.”

“I'm not doing anything. It's my home. Buy your own.”

Mom snapped, her voice sharp. “Stop humiliating your brother over your stubbornness.”

I reached for my phone on the table to call my personal legal counsel. Ethan lunged forward, moving faster than I expected.

“Sign it, Claire.”

“Back away from me, Ethan.”

Everything happened in a chaotic blur. The shouting. His heavy step forward to block my path. My heavy, pregnant foot slipping awkwardly beside the decorative edge of the coffee table.

Then hard marble slammed against my body.

A white-hot wave of pain tore through my lower abdomen. And suddenly, terrifyingly, I felt a heavy warmth spreading beneath my dress.

I stopped breathing.

“My water broke.”

Chloe went entirely pale, pressing her manicured hands to her cheeks. “Oh my God.”

“Call an ambulance!” I choked out, doubled over in agony.

Instead of moving to help me, Dad grabbed Ethan’s arm to pull him back. Mom picked up her designer purse from the sofa. Without a second glance, they all headed straight toward the private elevator.

I stared at their retreating backs in utter disbelief. “Mom! Help me!”

Mom turned once before stepping through the threshold. “You always make everything so dramatic, Claire.”

The elevator doors slid shut.
