Chapter 2 - The Knock at the Door

Left alone on the cold marble floor, I screamed out in pain as another sharp contraction gripped my body. The warmth beneath me pooled further, a stark reminder that my baby was coming far too early.
Clang. Clang. Clang.
Heavy, urgent pounding echoed against my front entry door.
“Ms. Claire Morgan?” a deep, commanding voice called out from the hallway.
I couldn't stand up. The agony in my abdomen was too intense, pinning me to the floor. “Who is it?” I managed to gasp out, tears blurring my vision.
“Special Agent Daniel Reeves, Federal Bureau of Investigation. We need to speak with you immediately regarding an unauthorized property transfer.”
My breath hitched. My eyes drifted away from my own spreading pain, moving toward Ethan’s manila folder lying wide open on the marble just a few feet away.
Through the haze of another sharp contraction, my eyes caught something on the final page of the deed transfer that I hadn't noticed during the argument.

My blood ran cold. Ethan hadn't simply tried to bully his pregnant sister into surrendering a high-end apartment. Someone had already filed preliminary paperwork to transfer the deed out of my name without my consent—using a forged signature and an offshore shell company.
And in his haste to ambush me before his wedding, my brother had just left the physical evidence lying directly beside me on the floor.
