Chapter 12 - The Shadows Closing In

The heavy oak door slammed shut behind Harrison Vance and his private security guards, leaving a lingering chill in the sterile hospital room that even the aggressive climate control couldn't dispel. I sat upright against the propped pillows, my heart hammering violently against my ribs like a trapped bird, while my newborn daughter slept on completely unaware in her clear plastic bassinet beside me. Every single corporate asset I had spent a decade building from the ground up had been frozen with a single judicial stroke, and now they were weaponizing my own motherhood against me, trying to use the threat of child protective services to break my spirit. But they gravely underestimated the primal, razor-sharp fury of a mother pushed to the absolute edge.

Before I could even catch my breath, Special Agent Daniel Reeves burst back through the door, his face dark and shadowed by the grim reality of the situation unfolding downstairs.

“Did you get it all recorded?” I asked, my voice cutting through the quiet tension of the room like a drawn blade.

“Every single word, Claire,” Reeves confirmed, pulling a digital audio recorder from his tactical jacket pocket and setting it gently on the edge of the mattress. “Harrison Vance just committed a Class D federal felony by attempting to coerce a witness using your child as leverage. The prosecutor is already drawing up an immediate warrant for his arrest. But we have a much bigger, more terrifying problem to deal with right now.”

Reeves pulled up a chair, dragging it close to the bed, and unfolded an encrypted operational tablet displaying a live map of Manhattan and a series of intercepted international bank wire transfers.

“Viktor Vance isn't just playing a corporate game anymore,” Reeves continued, lowering his voice to a grave whisper. “The moment Harrison walked out of here empty-handed, Vance’s offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands triggered an emergency liquidation protocol. They are liquidating seventy million dollars in syndicate assets, and they’ve hired an elite, unrecorded black-ops retrieval team to make sure you—and the titanium micro-chip containing your grandfather's trust records—disappear permanently before the federal indictments drop tomorrow morning.”
