Chapter 16 - The Hidden Equalizer

My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped drum. I couldn't run back up the freight ladder, and I couldn't outrun a bullet across an open concrete floor while holding a newborn baby. I needed a distraction, and I needed it immediately.

My hand slipped into the deep pocket of my tactical jacket, searching blindly for anything useful. My fingers brushed against my encrypted secure phone—the very device Special Agent Reeves had used to record Harrison Vance’s extortion attempt.

The battery is at four percent, I remembered grimly. And the local signal jammer is active.

Unless... I could trigger the device's high-frequency emergency broadcast protocol, designed to ping any open federal satellite relay within a five-mile radius.

Without making a sound, I pulled the phone out, tapped the emergency broadcast override code, and hurled the buzzing device across the concrete floor toward a row of empty metal fuel drums on the opposite side of the loading dock.

Clatter—clang!

The phone hit the metal barrels loudly, its screen flashing a blinding, piercing white strobe light while emitting a shrill, high-pitched emergency siren ping.

The syndicate operative spun around instantly, his gun raising toward the noise. “Over there! Check the barrels!”

Two secondary thugs emerged from the back of the van, rushing blindly toward the flashing light on the far side of the room.

It was the only opening I was going to get.
