Chapter 2 - Shattered Glass and Broken Vows

The champagne glass chimed as the diamond engagement ring hit the bottom, sinking beneath the bubbling golden liquid. The silence in the grand ballroom was absolute, broken only by the crackle of the audio file looping softly from Adrian’s phone.

Vanessa’s face lost every trace of color. The carefully cultivated poise of a billionaire heiress melted away, leaving behind a look of raw, panicky fury.

“Adrian, you’re listening to a manipulated file,” Vanessa hissed, stepping forward and attempting to grab his arm. “She’s an opportunist! She crawled out of the slums with a doctored audio clip to ruin our night!”

Adrian didn’t flinch. He shrugged her hand off his arm with a cold, mechanical precision that made Vanessa recoil.

“Manipulated?” Adrian’s voice was dangerously quiet, cutting through the murmurs of the stunned guests like a scalpel. “That’s legal counsel Marcus Vance’s voice on the recording, accompanied by your mother’s signature cadence. And more importantly... the financial ledgers matching these dates are already syncing to my tablet.”

Celeste Harrington finally descended the last two steps of the grand staircase, her posture rigid, though her hands trembled against her silk shawl.

“Adrian, stop this public humiliation right now,” Celeste commanded, her voice dropping into the icy tone she had used to command boardrooms for decades. “We will discuss family matters behind closed doors.”

“There are no more closed doors, Celeste,” Adrian corrected, refusing to call her Mother for the first time in his life. He walked past Vanessa, ignoring her entirely, and knelt beside the marble floor where Elena was still catching her breath.

Gently, Adrian extended a hand. Elena looked up, her eyes wide with shock and caution, before slowly placing her trembling hand in his. He pulled her to her feet, steadying her against the cold stone.

“I’m sorry,” Adrian whispered, his voice cracking slightly. “I’m so sorry for what they did to you.”

Vanessa glared at Elena with unadulterated venom. “This isn’t over,” she snarled, grabbing her designer clutch from a nearby table. “You think you’ve won, but without the corporate board’s backing, you’re nothing, Adrian. You’ll be begging us to take you back by morning.”

She turned on her heel and stormed out through the terrace doors, leaving her shattered engagement party behind in a wake of stunned silence.
