Chapter 3 - The Inheritance Audit

By midnight, the ballroom had completely emptied of guests, leaving only the security guards, Adrian, Marcus Vance (who had arrived pale and sweating twenty minutes after being summoned), and Elena.

Elena sat in a plush armchair in the private study, a cup of warm tea between her hands, while Adrian reviewed the documents extracted from the USB drive.

“The trusts were systematically drained,” Adrian said, his eyes scanning the digital columns on his laptop. “When our father passed away seven years ago, the primary estate was supposed to be split equally between legitimate and recognized heirs. But Celeste and Vanessa’s family used forged proxy signatures to declare you a runaway thief, Elena, and reallocated your entire share into a shell corporation.”

Marcus Vance wiped sweat from his forehead with a handkerchief. “Mr. Harrington... Adrian, let’s be reasonable. Litigation of this scale will destroy the stock value of Harrington Industries. We can settle this quietly—a monetary payout, a non-disclosure agreement—”

“Quietly?” Adrian cut him off, slamming the laptop shut with a force that made Marcus jump. “You helped orchestrate the illegal banishment of my sister, Marcus. You helped forge documents to cover up a corporate theft. You’re disbarred as of this afternoon.”

Elena looked up from her tea, her voice steady despite the lingering shock. “My mother didn't steal a single cent from this house, Adrian. They fired her the night she discovered they were tampering with the accounts. They threw us out into the rain with nothing more than the clothes on our backs.”

“And they’re going to pay for every single day of it,” Adrian vowed, standing up from the desk. He turned to his half-sister, his expression softening with a profound, protective resolve. “You’re not leaving this estate, Elena. This is your home as much as it is mine. And starting tomorrow, we’re going to audit every square inch of what our family built.”

Celeste stood in the doorway of the study, watching them with cold, calculating eyes.

“You think you can dismantle forty years of power overnight, Adrian?” Celeste asked softly, stepping into the dim light. “You’ll find that empires aren't easily broken by a grieving son and a bitter outcast.”

“Watch me,” Adrian replied.
