Chapter 8 - The Secret of the Fireplace

The heavy iron panel swung inward, revealing a small, velvet-lined recess that had remained untouched for over two decades. Inside sat a stack of thick, parchment-bound envelopes, their red wax seals bearing the original crest of the Harrington family patriarch.
Adrian handed the stack to Elena. Her hands did not tremble as she held them. The fear that had defined her childhood was entirely gone, replaced by the quiet confidence of a woman reclaiming her history.
“Read them,” Adrian encouraged, leaning against the stone mantelpiece.
Elena carefully broke the seal of the top envelope and unfolded a document dated twenty-six years ago. It was a formal codicil to the original Harrington estate charter, witnessed and signed by three independent legal magistrates.
“In the event of my incapacitation or untimely demise,” the text read, “the entire voting share of Harrington Industries shall be divided equally between my lawful son, Adrian Harrington, and my recognized biological daughter, Elena Vance—born of Martha Vance. No secondary board member, spouse, or corporate trustee may override this bloodline division.”
Adrian stared at the paper, a bitter laugh escaping his lips. “Celeste knew. She knew the entire time. That’s why she had to erase your mother, and why she fabricated the story that you were a thief.”

“She wanted total control of the board,” Elena said, sliding the documents into her briefcase. “With us out of the picture, she and Vanessa could siphon the assets indefinitely without a legal challenge.”
“Well, her monopoly is officially over,” Adrian replied, his jaw set with resolve. “Tomorrow morning, we file this codicil with the federal court. Harrington Industries will finally operate the way our father intended—transparent, accountable, and just.”
