Chapter 6 - Shadows in the Archive

Two weeks later, the chaos of the corporate restructuring had settled into a steady, rigorous rhythm. The federal investigation into the Vance syndicate was expanding daily, and the board of Harrington Industries had officially voted to restructure the enterprise into a transparent, community-backed trust—honoring the original vision of Adrian and Elena’s father.

Late one evening, Elena stayed behind in the sprawling underground archive of the mansion—the very room where her mother had spent twenty years cataloging the family’s history.

The air smelled of aged paper, leather bindings, and polished oak. Using a small brass key she found inside her mother’s Bible, Elena unlocked a restricted floor cabinet labeled Private Memoranda - 1998.

Inside sat a small, leather-bound journal with her mother’s initials embossed in gold leaf: M.E.

Elena sat at the wooden reading desk, turning the pages slowly. The entries detailed her mother’s early years at the estate—her quiet dedication, her growing friendship with the estate’s master, and eventually, the crushing realization of Celeste’s cold paranoia.

One entry, dated a week before Elena was born, caught her eye:

“Celeste knows about the child. She threatened to strip everything away—not just from me, but from Adrian as well, if the truth ever comes to light. But Arthur swore to me that no matter what happens, our bloodline will reclaim this house. He left the true deeds inside the wall safe behind the library fireplace. May God protect us all.”

Elena’s breath hitched. The library fireplace.

Before she could stand up, a heavy creak echoed behind her in the dark archive corridor.

Footsteps approached—slow, deliberate, and entirely uninvited.
