Chapter 7 - The Last Stand at the Fireplace

Elena froze, her hand hovering over the open journal. The archive lights flickered once, twice, before plunging into the amber glow of the emergency emergency overhead lamps.

A figure stepped out from the shadows of the floor-to-ceiling bookshelves.

It wasn't a federal agent, and it wasn't Adrian.

It was Vanessa.

Her designer clothes were rumpled, her hair slightly unkempt, and her eyes burned with a manic, desperate edge. In her right hand, she held a heavy brass paperweight shaped like an eagle.

“You think you won everything, don't you?” Vanessa whispered, her voice echoing off the stone walls of the archive. “You think because my mother made a few bad paperwork choices, you and your bastard brother get to take over the entire empire?”

Elena stood up slowly from the desk, keeping the heavy wooden chair between them. “Vanessa, put the paperweight down. The federal marshals are upstairs. You can’t run from this.”

“I’m not running,” Vanessa snarled, taking a sharp step forward. “I’m finishing what my mother started. If I can't have Harrington Industries, neither can you.”

Vanessa lunged forward, swinging the heavy brass object toward Elena’s head.

Elena ducked swiftly, shoving the wooden chair directly into Vanessa’s path. Vanessa tripped over the chair leg, stumbling hard against the edge of the oak desk, dropping the brass paperweight with a loud, metallic crash against the stone floor.

Before Vanessa could recover her balance, the heavy archive doors flew open.

Adrian stood in the doorway, flanked by two security guards, his expression carved out of absolute stone.

“That’s enough, Vanessa,” Adrian said, his voice cold enough to freeze blood.

Within minutes, the local and federal authorities had secured the archive once and for all. Vanessa was escorted out in handcuffs, her final threats swallowed by the quiet hum of the estate’s automated security systems.

By midnight, the house was finally, truly still.

Adrian and Elena stood together in the private library, facing the grand stone fireplace. Using the small brass key found in her mother’s journal, Elena unlocked the iron panel concealed behind the decorative brickwork.

Inside sat the original, uncorrupted family deeds—signed, sealed, and legally untouchable.

Adrian looked down at the documents, then at Elena, offering a slow, genuine smile.

“To new foundations,” Adrian said softly.

Elena smiled back, sliding the documents into her briefcase. “To the truth.”
