Chapter 4 - The Counter-Strike

The following morning, the financial markets reacted with violent volatility. Word of the engagement cancellation had already leaked to the press, but the real earthquake hit when federal regulators received a comprehensive digital package containing the complete audit trail of the Harrington-Vance asset laundering scheme.
Adrian sat at the head of the long mahogany conference table on the top floor of Harrington Tower. The executive board members—men and women who had nodded politely while Celeste ran the company like a medieval fiefdom—sat in stunned silence.
“Effective immediately,” Adrian announced, sliding copies of the federal audit report across the polished wood, “all executive privileges held by the Vance family are revoked. Their shares are frozen pending federal investigation for corporate fraud and conspiracy.”
An elderly board member, Arthur Sterling, adjusted his glasses nervously. “Adrian, my boy... Vanessa’s father controls thirty percent of our raw material supply chain in the eastern sector. If we cut ties now, our manufacturing plants will grind to a halt within forty-eight hours.”
The heavy oak doors of the boardroom swung open.
Elena walked in, wearing a sharp, tailored navy suit that mirrored the exact style her mother used to wear when she worked as the estate’s senior archivist. Behind her walked Marcus Vance’s former junior associate, carrying three heavy boxes of secondary ledgers.
“They won't grind to a halt, Mr. Sterling,” Elena said, her voice clear, confident, and ringing with absolute authority. She placed a thick folder on the table directly in front of him. “Because three weeks ago, I secured alternative supply contracts with independent distributors across the state—contracts that bypass the Vance monopoly entirely.”
Murmurs erupted around the table. Board members stared alternately at Elena and the documents, finally recognizing the undeniable competence and sharp intellect she had inherited from the very father who tried to erase her.
Adrian looked at his half-sister with undisguised pride. “You heard her. Implement the new supply chain immediately.”

As the board members scrambled to comply, a security tablet on the edge of the table lit up with a video alert from the estate gates downstairs.
Celeste Vance—escorted by two private attorneys—was demanding entry, accompanied by local county deputies brandishing an emergency injunction.
