Chapter 12 - THE EMERGENCY HEARING

The Stamford Family Courtroom was packed with journalists, legal aides, and curious spectators by 2:00 PM the following afternoon.
Victoria sat at the petitioner’s table in an understated navy-blue dress, wearing minimal makeup to emphasize the faint yellowing bruise on her left cheekbone. Beside her stood Arthur Sterling, a silver-haired attorney known for tearing wealthy tech executives apart in messy, highly publicized divorces.
Daniel sat at the respondent’s table in a tailored charcoal suit, his face unreadable. Beside him, Marcus Vance adjusted his spectacles, laying out a single leather binder on the mahogany desk.
"Your Honor," Arthur Sterling began, stepping up to the podium with practiced theatrical flair. "My client, Victoria Vance, lived in absolute terror inside the Vance residence. On the night of November 4th, Mr. Vance returned from a business trip in an unprovoked rage, striking my client across the face with enough force to cause structural tissue damage—all in front of a traumatized seven-year-old child."
Judge Helen Carter leaned forward over her bench, her brow furrowed. "Mr. Vance, domestic violence in the presence of a minor is a severe charge that warrants an immediate protective order. How do you respond?"
Marcus Vance stood up smoothly, picking up a small metal flash drive from the table.
"Your Honor, we do not deny that physical contact occurred on the night of November 4th," Marcus declared clearly. "However, my client acted under the legal doctrine of defense of a third party—specifically, to halt an ongoing, severe act of psychological torture and child endangerment being inflicted upon his seven-year-old daughter."
Grumblings echoed through the gallery. Arthur Sterling scoffed loudly. "This is a desperate deflection, Your Honor!"

"Silence, Counsel," Judge Carter snapped, pointing at Marcus. "Explicate your claim, Mr. Vance."
Marcus walked over to the court bailiff, handing over the drive. "We submit into evidence Defense Exhibit A: forty-eight minutes of unedited, continuous internal camera footage from the kitchen of 104 Whisper Pines Lane, timestamped 8:45 PM on November 4th."
