Chapter 16 - THE PURIFICATION

The day after Victoria signed the surrender documents, Daniel took three days off from work—the first time he had taken an unscheduled leave in over seven years.

He spent the weekend reclaiming the house.

Together with Emma, Daniel walked through every single room of 104 Whisper Pines Lane. Every piece of furniture, artwork, or decor that Victoria had selected was tagged, removed, and loaded into a charity collection truck. The cold, sterile overhead lighting in the kitchen was replaced with warm, soft brass pendants that bathed the marble counter in a gentle, inviting glow.

In Emma’s bedroom, Daniel spent Saturday afternoon building a custom wooden bookshelf filled with her favorite fairy tales, soft velvet plushies, and framed photos of her late mother.

On Sunday morning, for the first time in years, the kitchen smelled of warm maple syrup, fresh bacon, and toasted waffles.

Emma sat at the kitchen island on her high barstool, wearing cozy blue pajamas, her feet swinging happily in the air. She drizzled syrup over her waffles, laughing as Duke—the Golden Retriever—sat beside her, resting his large furry head gently on her knee.

"Daddy, look!" Emma giggled, feeding Duke a tiny piece of unseasoned waffle crust directly from her hand. "Duke likes waffles too!"

Daniel stood by the stove, leaning against the counter with a mug of fresh coffee, watching them with a quiet smile. The heavy, suffocating tension that had hung over the estate for two years was completely gone.

The house was no longer a golden cage. It was finally a home.
