Chapter 5 - THE THREAD UNRAVELS

Daniel froze.
The words didn't just hurt—they detonated inside his mind.
She told me not to tell you.
Those six words collapsed the entire reality Daniel had built over the last two years. This wasn't a single isolated incident of cruel discipline. This wasn't a sudden lapse in judgment on a stressful evening.
It was a systematic, secret nightmare that had been unfolding every single time he stepped out of the front door.
Daniel slowly turned his head to look at Victoria.
Victoria was trying to push herself up onto her elbows, but as she met Daniel’s gaze, her breath caught in her throat. The arrogance, the refined elegance, the cold authority—it all vanished, leaving behind a terrified woman who realized she was locked in a room with a monster she had created.
Daniel’s voice dropped into a register so low and dark it sounded subhuman.
"What exactly," Daniel asked, every syllable laced with a lethal edge, "have you been doing to my daughter while I was away?"
Victoria swallowed hard, backing away on her hands and knees until her back hit the base of the cabinets. "Daniel... listen to me... she's lying... she's trying to manipulate you—"
"Shut up," Daniel whispered. He didn't scream. He didn't throw anything. The quietness of his fury was infinitely more terrifying than his shout.
He wrapped his thick arms around Emma, gently pulling her small, fragile body up into his chest. He buried his face in her hair, shielding her completely from Victoria’s sight, holding her so tightly it felt as if he were trying to weld her back into his own body.
Emma clung to her father’s shirt, burying her face into his neck, letting out a soft, shuddering sob of safety for the first time in months.

Over his daughter’s shoulder, Daniel stared at Victoria. His eyes were a storm of profound anguish, sickening shock, and a promise of absolute ruin.
The front door was locked. The blizzard was howling outside. And the war inside 104 Whisper Pines Lane had just begun.
