Chapter 14 - THE SOCIAL COLLAPSE

By 5:00 PM, news of the courtroom footage had leaked past the sealed doors.
The story didn't just break; it shattered Victoria’s social standing across the entire state of Connecticut. The very country clubs, charity boards, and high-society circles where Victoria had cultivated her image of refined elegance closed their doors to her instantly.
Her personal social media accounts were inundated with thousands of furious messages. The prestigious country club in Greenwich revoked her membership by dinner time, and her family’s old political contacts refused to take her calls.
Victoria fled the courtroom through a side exit, hounded by reporters thrusting microphones into her face:
"Victoria! Did you force your stepdaughter to eat out of a dog bowl?" "Are you facing felony child abuse charges?" "Is it true the DA is issuing an arrest warrant?"
She threw herself into the back of a hired sedan, ducking below the windows as the car sped away into the evening rain.
Sitting in a cramped, mid-tier hotel room near the highway, Victoria stared at her phone. Her credit cards had been frozen by court order. Her high-priced lawyer, Arthur Sterling, had sent an emergency email formally withdrawing as her legal counsel due to non-payment and ethical conflicts.
She was utterly alone, completely exposed, and facing the imminent threat of a federal grand jury indictment.
Her phone buzzed on the nightstand. It was a text message from an unknown, encrypted number.

You have one hour to leave the state before the arrest warrant is signed. Or you can meet me at the diner on Route 7 and sign the final unconditional surrender.
Victoria squeezed the phone so tightly her knuckles turned white. She knew who sent it.
