Chapter 15 - THE SURRENDER

At 8:00 PM, inside a dimly lit, quiet diner off Route 7, Daniel sat in a corner booth, wearing a black wool coat over an open-collared shirt. Beside him sat Marcus Vance with a thick stack of legal documents and a pen.

The bell above the door chimed softly.

Victoria walked in. She looked nothing like the polished, elegant woman who had ruled the Vance mansion. Her hair was pulled back into a messy ponytail, her eyes were swollen and bloodshot, and she wore a plain rain jacket to avoid recognition.

She slid into the booth opposite Daniel, her body trembling slightly from the cold.

"You ruined me, Daniel," she whispered, her voice cracked and hollow. "You destroyed my reputation. You made me a pariah."

"You ruined yourself the second you mistreated my daughter," Daniel replied, his voice devoid of anger, containing only an absolute, icy finality. "I didn't destroy your life, Victoria. I simply showed the world who you really were."

Marcus Vance slid the documents across the formica table.

"This is an absolute, non-negotiable settlement agreement," Marcus explained flatly. "You will surrender all claims to marital property, waive all rights to alimony, agree to a permanent order of protection, and sign a full confession of civil liability for emotional distress regarding Emma."

Victoria looked at the thick stack of paper. "And if I sign this?"

"Daniel will instruct his legal team not to push for maximum sentencing with the DA," Marcus said. "You will likely receive probation and community service rather than five years in a state penitentiary."

Victoria looked up at Daniel, her eyes desperate. "You’re offering me a deal?"

"I’m offering you a choice between starting over with nothing, or spending your thirties in a cell," Daniel said, leaning forward. "Sign the paper, take your suitcase, and get out of my state. If I ever see your face near Emma again, I will spend every dollar I own to ensure you rot in prison."

Victoria’s hands shook as she picked up the pen. A single tear fell onto the crisp white paper as she flipped through the pages, signing her name on every dotted line.

Victoria Vance. Victoria Vance. Victoria Vance.

When the final page was signed, Marcus swept the documents back into his briefcase.

Victoria sat frozen in the booth, looking like a ghost in the dim diner light. Daniel stood up, buttoned his coat, and looked down at her one last time.

"Goodbye, Victoria," Daniel said softly.

He turned and walked out into the cool night air, leaving her sitting alone in the quiet booth with nothing left to her name.
