Chapter 17 - THE LAST REMNANT

While the corporate empire crumbled above ground, a silent threat still lingered in the city's underbelly.
Vance—Victor’s scar-faced security chief—had evaded the federal dragnet at the 4th Street warehouse. Operating out of an untraceable safehouse near the eastern rail yards, Vance knew that if he was caught, he faced a lifetime in maximum security.
Sitting in the dim light of a tactical trailer, Vance received an encrypted voice message from Victor’s offshore legal counsel:
THE TRUST FUNDS ARE FROZEN. ELOWEN HALE HAS SUBMITTED HER ORIGINAL TESTAMENTARY DOCUMENTS TO THE PROBATE COURT. IF SHE SURVIVES THE WEEK, THE ENTIRE ESTATE AUTOMATICALLY REVERTS TO HER AS ARTHUR’S LAWFUL SURVIVING SPOUSE.

Vance crushed his cigarette in an glass ashtray. His loyalty to Victor was dead, but his self-preservation was very much alive. If Elowen died before the probate hearing at noon tomorrow, the legal ownership of the core holding company would default into an offshore limbo—a loophole Vance’s offshore contacts could exploit to transfer tens of millions in un-audited bearer bonds.
"Get the weapons," Vance ordered his two remaining operatives sitting across the table. "We end this at the river before sunrise."
