Chapter 7 - THE ESCAPE THROUGH THE OAKS

Julian took a sharp step forward, his fists clenched at his sides. "Get out of my mother's house, Vance, or I'll have federal marshals on this property in five minutes."

Vance gave a faint, chilling smile. "There is no cell reception within two miles of this river bend, sir. We jammed the local towers ten minutes ago."

Before Vance could raise his weapon, Elowen acted.

She slammed her heavy steel flashlight against the wall-mounted breaker box beside the kitchen frame.

SPARK!

The main fuse blew, plunging the cottage into complete, pitch-black darkness.

"Move!" Elowen hissed, grabbing Julian’s wrist with a grip remarkably strong for her size.

Having lived in the cottage for twenty-five years, Elowen knew every floorboard in the dark. She pulled Julian through the narrow pantry door, down three creaking wooden steps into a cool, dirt-floor root cellar beneath the kitchen.

Above them, muffled suppressed gunshots coughed into the dark floorboards as Vance’s men opened fire blindly.

Wood splinters rained down on Julian’s head. Elowen unlocked a heavy iron storm hatch at the rear of the cellar, pushing it open into the wet, cold night air behind the house.

"To the river dock!" Elowen whispered over the sound of rushing water. "My old skiff is tied to the pilings!"
