Chapter 2 - THE SHADOW ON THE STEPS

The single word hung in the cold air like a strike of thunder.
"Julian, what is this?!" Clara’s mother, Evelyn Hale, snapped as she marched down the steps, her diamond necklace glinting in the midday sun. "Who is this woman? Security, remove her at once!"
"Don't touch her!" Julian suddenly bellowed, his voice booming across the cathedral courtyard with a raw power that shocked every guest into absolute silence.
He took a slow step down, his eyes locked onto Elowen. The stoic, commanding CEO of Thorne Global seemed to crumble from the inside out. "You... died. My father... he told me you died in the hospital after the accident when I was five."
"Your father lied to you, Julian," Elowen said quietly, her voice trembling with decades of suppressed pain. "Arthur Thorne didn't just tell you I died. He paid off the county hospital, erased my name from your birth certificate, and used a court injunction to keep me three hundred miles away under threat of imprisonment."
Gasps rippled through the gathered high-society guests.
"This is absurd!" Clara gasped, taking a step back from Julian, her eyes darting between the photo on his screen and the worn woman in the brown coat. "Julian, she’s a fraud! She’s trying to ruin our wedding!"
Elowen reached into her coat pocket and pulled out an yellowed, official document—a certified birth record bearing the seal of the state health department, dated thirty years prior.

"Look at the registration line, Julian," Elowen whispered, holding the paper out. "Julian Arthur Thorne. Mother: Elowen Vance-Hale."
Julian’s hands shook violently as he took the birth certificate. Listed clearly beneath the state registrar seal was her name—and beside it, the hand-written signature of his late father, Arthur Thorne.
