Chapter 7 - The Empty Wire

The federal marshals escorted Vanessa and Cynthia out through the service freight elevators, their designer heels clicking hollowly against the concrete floors until the heavy steel doors sealed shut behind them.
Upstairs in the presidential suite, the medical team had finished checking Elena's vitals. Though her physical endurance had been severely tested by three years of isolation and restricted care, her mind was as sharp as a razor. She sat across from Alexander at the mahogany writing desk, reviewing a digital printout of the Whitmore Holding’s primary liquidity ledger.
“They didn’t act alone, Alexander,” Elena said, her finger tracing a series of encrypted transaction hashes on the screen. “Cynthia isn't smart enough or wealthy enough to maintain a subterranean medical holding facility for thirty-six months. Look at the routing codes for these structural maintenance invoices.”
Alexander leaned in, his silvering brows drawing together. “Swiss clearinghouses. The same banking architecture used by private defense contractors and offshore asset trusts.”
“Exactly,” Elena replied, looking up to meet his eyes. “Someone with immense global reach backed their play. And the moment the federal asset freeze hit Vanessa’s accounts tonight, an automated kill-switch triggered on this server.”

Before Alexander could touch the keyboard, the screen flickered violently. A red command-line interface filled the monitor, wiping the financial data clean in a cascade of scrolling zeroes.
A chillingly synthetic automated voice echoed from the laptop’s tiny speakers: “Storage purge complete. Jurisdiction transferred.”
