Chapter 1 - The Sapphire’s Signal

The air in Blackthorn Manor carried the heavy, suffocating scent of victory. Nathan Ashford stood by the marble fireplace, swirling a glass of single-malt scotch as if he were the undisputed king of a conquered province. His tailored suit was immaculate, his posture dripping with arrogant self-assurance.

Just a few feet away sat Celeste, his mistress and co-conspirator, lounging on an antique velvet settee with a flute of vintage champagne in her hand. Her lips curled into a lazy, predatory smile as she watched Evelyn standing in the center of the drawing room. To Celeste, Evelyn’s public humiliation was the finest entertainment money could buy.

The staff had been dismissed hours ago, paid off or threatened into silence. The security feeds had supposedly been wiped clean by a technician Nathan had bribed. According to Nathan’s airtight calculations, every door was locked, every witness was erased, and every possible version of the narrative belonged entirely to him. He had stripped Evelyn of her accounts, her dignity, and her legal footing, reducing her to a trespasser in her own home.

Nathan believed he had won. He believed Evelyn had no one left to turn to.

Yet, Evelyn remained strangely calm. Too calm.

The icy serenity in her posture unsettled Nathan more than tears ever could. Around her throat, the heavy sapphire pendant—an heirloom he had mocked a thousand times as an old-fashioned trinket—caught the sharp glare of the crystal chandelier. It didn't just reflect the light; it pulsed with a dull, hidden metallic sheen.

It wasn’t just jewelry. It was a beacon.

With slow, deliberate fingers, Evelyn reached into the pocket of her coat. She withdrew her phone, unlocked the screen with a single touch, and dialed a private, pre-programmed speed dial.

Before the first ring could even finish its echo, the line was picked up on the other end.

Evelyn kept her eyes locked on Nathan’s narrowing gaze. A cold, fierce smile touched the corners of her lips. She brought the phone to her ear and whispered into the receiver:

May you like

“Dad… exactly like you taught me.”

The moment the words left her lips, the ambient hum of the manor seemed to die. Celeste’s champagne glass suddenly began to shake violently against her ringed fingers, a thin crack splitting the crystal stem right down the middle.
