Chapter 13 - The Last Defense

In the cold, sterile visiting room of the maximum-security federal facility, Nathan Ashford stared at the final legal brief brought by his public defender. Every single motion to appeal had been summarily denied. The courts had officially rejected his claims of corporate restructuring immunity, and his remaining properties had been auctioned off to satisfy state tax liens.

“There are no more loopholes, Nathan,” his lawyer said, packing his briefcase with an air of profound indifference. “The judge upheld the asset forfeiture under the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations statute. You’re looking at the full term without parole.”

Nathan didn't answer. He couldn't. His mind flashed back to the night at Blackthorn Manor when he had stood by the fireplace, holding a glass of scotch, entirely convinced he was untouchable. Now, the man who had treated human lives like disposable corporate assets was reduced to a prisoner number on a manifest.

Down the hall, in a separate block, Celeste sat in total darkness during lockdown hours. The hollow sound of heavy security doors slamming shut echoed through the tiers. She realized too late that the empire she had conspired to steal had never truly belonged to anyone who lacked the integrity to sustain it. They had built a fortress out of deception, only to find themselves buried beneath its ruins.
