Chapter 10 - The Gala of Transparency

One year after the dramatic takedown at Blackthorn Manor, the grand ballroom of the city’s premier cultural center was filled to capacity. There were no hushed whispers of corporate backstabbing or fearful glances at rival executives. Instead, the room buzzed with genuine celebration.

The occasion was the inaugural gala for the Vance-Ashford Foundation for Corporate Reform.

Elena stood backstage, adjusting the cuffs of her emerald silk evening gown. The sapphire pendant rested securely against her collarbone—no longer a secret distress beacon, but a symbol of survival and absolute triumph.

Her father, Victor Vance, stepped out from the shadows of the wings, adjusting his tuxedo jacket with the quiet dignity that had commanded boardrooms for decades. He looked at his daughter with a gaze full of unexpressed, deep paternal pride.

“The ballroom is packed,” Victor said, a faint smile touching his lips. “The attorney general is in the front row, and half the financial reform board is waiting to hear your keynote address.”

Elena turned to face him, her eyes bright. “They aren't just coming to hear a speech, Dad. They’re coming to witness proof that a corrupt system can actually be torn down and rebuilt by the people it tried to crush.”

“You did that, Elena,” Victor said softly, placing a warm hand on her shoulder. “You didn't just reclaim your inheritance. You rewrote the rules of engagement.”

The house lights in the ballroom flickered twice—the universal signal that the program was about to begin. The master of ceremonies stepped up to the microphone, his voice echoing through the speakers.

“Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome the co-founder and executive director of the Vance-Ashford Trust... Evelyn Vance.”
