Chapter 12 - Shadows and Sunlight

Later that night, long after the gala had ended and the last guests had departed, Elena stood alone on the expansive marble balcony of her downtown penthouse apartment.
The night air was crisp, carrying the distant, steady hum of city traffic below. The sprawling skyline sparkled like a field of scattered diamonds, a living testament to a city that kept moving forward, no matter how deep the shadows of the past had been.
Her phone buzzed on the small iron table beside her. It was a brief, encrypted notification from the federal prison warden’s office: Inmate transfer protocols complete. Maximum security lockdown enforced for the remainder of their sentences.
She didn't feel anger. She didn't feel triumph or bitterness anymore. Those emotions belonged to a version of herself that no longer existed—a woman who had been forced to hide in the background waiting for permission to survive.
Victor stepped out onto the balcony, holding two crystal glasses filled with sparkling cider. He handed one to his daughter, clinking his glass gently against hers.
