Chapter 18 - The Gathering Storm Clears

The trial of Bernice Vance and her co-conspirators lasted less than two weeks. Faced with overwhelming digital ledgers, recorded wire transfers, unassailable financial audits, and the direct testimony of Margaret Vance, the defense didn't even attempt to argue.

Bernice was denied bail and remanded to a high-security federal holding facility pending her final sentencing, her decades-long empire of manipulation and fraud completely obliterated. Judge Harrison was stripped of his robes and faced immediate disbarment alongside federal corruption charges.

Back in our apartment, life slowly bloomed into a vibrant, peaceful new reality. We spent our evenings reading baby books in the living room while Grandma Margaret sat by the window, listening to classical music and laughing freely for the first time in decades.
